How to Install Texture Packs in Minecraft PE (2025 Guide)

How To Install Minecraft PE Texture Packs

If you’ve ever wondered How To Install Texture Packs in Minecraft PE, you’re not alone. Frustrating doesn’t even cover it. Turns out the process is actually simple once you know what you’re doing. Takes maybe thirty seconds if the file cooperates. The problem is that texture packs come in different file formats, and sometimes your phone decides to be difficult about where it saves things.

I’ve installed probably a hundred packs at this point across different devices – Android phones, tablets, even tried it on my friend’s iPad once. Each platform has its quirks. Android gives you more flexibility with file management but can be finicky. iOS is more locked down but usually smoother when it works. This guide covers the actual step-by-step process, not the sanitized “it’s so easy!” version you see everywhere. Including what to do when things inevitably go wrong – because they will. Missing files, incorrect formats, packs that won’t activate… dealt with all of it. Let’s get your texture pack working.

How To Install Texture Packs in Minecraft PE

Download Texture Packs

First thing – find a legit source. I usually stick to our website MCPEGuides or official Minecraft forums because I’ve had sketchy websites try to shove adware onto my phone before. Not fun. When you click download, pay attention to where the file goes. Android usually dumps everything into a Downloads folder, but some browsers let you pick. iOS is pickier about this – Files app is your friend there. The file extension matters. You want .mcpack or .mcworld files because those install directly. Sometimes you’ll get a .zip instead, which means extra steps.

Don’t panic if that happens, just means whoever made the pack didn’t package it properly. Also, watch out for those garbage download sites with fake buttons everywhere. “Download here! No wait, here! Just kidding, here’s an ad!” You know the ones. The real download button is usually smaller and less flashy than the fake ones. Mobile data warning – some packs are 100MB+. Learned that lesson the hard way when I blew through my data cap downloading a realistic pack at a coffee shop.

Pro Tip: Always check if the texture pack is compatible with your MCPE version before downloading.

Installing Texture Packs on Android

Alright, so you’ve got the file downloaded. Now what? If it’s an .mcpack file, this should be stupidly easy. Just tap it once. Minecraft PE opens up automatically and imports the pack. Done. That’s literally it. Go to your world settings, activate it under resource packs, and you’re golden. But let’s be real – it doesn’t always work that smoothly. Sometimes tapping the file does absolutely nothing. Or it opens in some random app like your gallery or a text editor. Makes no sense, but Android does what Android does.

When that happens, here’s my workaround: Open Minecraft first. Then go to Settings, scroll down to Storage, and look for the “games/com.mojang/resource_packs” folder path. You need to manually move your downloaded file there using a file manager. I use Files by Google because it’s free and doesn’t have annoying ads. Got a .zip file instead? Extract it first. Inside should be a folder with all the pack files – manifest.json, textures folder, the whole deal. Copy that entire folder (not the .zip, the actual folder inside) into that resource_packs directory I mentioned. Restart Minecraft after moving files manually. It won’t show up otherwise.

Installing Texture Packs on iOS

iOS is weirdly both easier and more annoying than Android. Apple likes controlling everything, so you’ve got less flexibility but fewer ways to mess things up. Download the pack in Safari – don’t use Chrome or another browser because iOS handles file associations differently and it gets weird. When the .mcpack downloads, you’ll see it in your Downloads or it might immediately ask what app to open it with. Pick Minecraft. Should import right away.

Here’s where iOS gets stupid though. Sometimes the file just… sits there. Won’t open, won’t do anything. I’ve had this happen on my iPad more times than I can count. Solution? Open the Files app, find your Downloads folder, long-press the .mcpack file, and select Share. Then pick “Copy to Minecraft.” Roundabout way to do the same thing, but whatever works. Zip files are trickier on iOS. You’ll need to extract them first – Files app can do this natively now, just tap the .zip. But then you’re stuck because iOS doesn’t let you easily access Minecraft’s internal folders like Android does. Honestly? If you’re on iPhone and get a .zip, I’d just find a different version of that pack that’s properly packaged as .mcpack. Saves the headache.

Activating the Texture Pack in Minecraft PE

Once installed, the texture pack must be activated before it appears in the game.

How to Enable Texture Packs:

  1. Open Minecraft PE and go to Settings.
  2. Scroll down to Storage → Global Resources.
  3. Find the installed texture pack and activate it.
  4. Start a new world or load an existing world and enjoy the updated visuals.

Pro Tip: If the texture pack doesn’t appear, restart Minecraft PE and check again.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Pack won’t show up in the game

  • Happened to me yesterday actually. Downloaded a pack, installed it, opened Minecraft… nothing. Not in my resource packs list at all.
  • First move – restart the game completely. Don’t just minimize it, actually close it from your app switcher and reopen. Works about 60% of the time.
  • Still missing? The pack’s probably corrupted or missing its manifest file. Delete it and redownload from a different source. Some uploaders are sloppy with how they package things.

Game crashes after activating the pack

  • Your device can’t handle it. Either the resolution’s too high or the pack is poorly optimized. I killed Minecraft three times trying to run a 512x pack on my old phone before accepting defeat.
  • Try lower resolution versions if they exist. Or just accept that some packs aren’t meant for mobile devices regardless of what the description claims.

Textures look glitchy or wrong

  • Version mismatch, guaranteed. Pack was made for 1.18 but you’re running 1.21? Yeah, things break. Check the pack’s supported version before downloading – saves time.
  • Sometimes only certain blocks look broken. Usually means the pack’s incomplete or abandoned by its creator.

Can’t delete a pack

  • Go into your file manager and manually delete it from the resource_packs folder. iOS users are kind of screwed here – you might need to reinstall Minecraft entirely if a pack gets stuck. Annoying but it happens.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Can I install multiple texture packs at once?

Yes, but you can only apply a single texture pack in its entirety at once. Packs can be stacked, but some textures might take precedence over others.

2. Do texture packs affect FPS in MCPE?

Yes, FPS can be decreased by using high-resolution texture packs. Use 16×16 or 32×32 packs for improved performance if you encounter lag.

3. Are texture packs free in Minecraft PE?

While some creators offer premium packs with additional features, the majority of texture packs are free.

4. Can I use texture packs in multiplayer?

Yes, but for it to function correctly, every player in the session needs to have the same texture pack installed.
