How To Install Mods in Minecraft Bedrock Edition (2025 Guide)

How to Install Mods in Minecraft Bedrock Edition

Let me show you How To Install Mods in Minecraft Bedrock Edition. Okay, so first thing – Bedrock Edition doesn’t actually have “mods” the way Java Edition does. What people call mods are usually addons, which include behavior packs and resource packs working together. Real technical difference but it matters for how you install them. Took me forever to figure this out when I switched from Java to Bedrock. I kept looking for mod loaders and installation tools that just don’t exist for Bedrock. The whole system works differently, which is frustrating if you’re used to Java modding but actually simpler once you understand it.

Bedrock’s addon system is more limited than Java mods. You can’t completely overhaul the game or add complex mechanics as easily. But addons still let you do plenty – new mobs, items, blocks, changed behaviors, custom dimensions. Just not as extensively as Java’s modding scene allows.

The upside is addons are way easier to install. No mod loaders, no compatibility issues between different mods, no game-breaking conflicts. You download files, import them, activate them in your world. That’s basically it when things work correctly.

Where to Find Minecraft Bedrock Mods

MCPEGuides is my main source, same as maps and texture packs. They have a dedicated addons section with thousands of options. Quality varies but they moderate submissions enough that you’re not downloading complete garbage constantly. The official Minecraft Marketplace has paid addons if you’re willing to spend Minecoins. These are vetted by Microsoft so they’re guaranteed to work and won’t break your game. Pricey though – I’ve bought maybe three Marketplace addons total because most free community addons are good enough.

CurseForge added Bedrock support relatively recently. Not as many addons as Java mods obviously, but the selection is growing. Advantage is CurseForge has better organization and searching than most sites.

Some addon creators host on their own websites or link downloads through Discord servers. That’s fine for established creators with reputations, but be cautious with random sites you’ve never heard of. Sketchy download pages with fake buttons everywhere are still common unfortunately.

How To Install Mods in Minecraft Bedrock Edition

Addons come as .mcaddon or .mcpack files usually. Sometimes you get .zip files containing behavior and resource packs separately, which is more annoying. For .mcaddon or .mcpack files, the process is stupid simple. Download the file, tap it, Minecraft opens automatically and imports the addon. You’ll see a notification that the resource pack and/or behavior pack was imported successfully.

Now here’s the part people mess up – importing isn’t the same as activating. The addon is in your game files now but not actually doing anything yet. You need to apply it to a world. Create a new world or edit an existing one. In world settings, scroll down to Resource Packs and Behavior Packs sections. Your imported addons should appear in the available lists. Tap them to move them to the active list. Resource pack goes in resource packs, behavior pack goes in behavior packs. Some addons only have one or the other, some have both.

Order matters if you’re using multiple addons. They load from bottom to top, so whatever’s at the top of your active list has priority. If two addons modify the same thing, the one higher in the list wins. Usually doesn’t matter but occasionally causes conflicts.

Installing Mods on Android & iOS

Mobile installation follows what I just described – tap the .mcaddon file, it imports, activate it in world settings. Both Android and iOS handle this the same way now. Android gives you more flexibility if things go wrong. You can manually access the games/com.mojang folder and move pack folders into behavior_packs and resource_packs directories yourself. Useful when the automatic import fails for some reason.

I’ve had to do manual installation on Android maybe five times when tapping files just did nothing. Extract the .mcaddon (it’s basically a .zip with a different extension), find the behavior and resource folders inside, copy them to the appropriate com.mojang folders. Then they show up in-game like any other pack.

iOS doesn’t let you access internal folders as easily. If automatic import fails, you’re kind of stuck. Can try using the Files app share menu to force it to Minecraft, but if that doesn’t work your options are limited. Honestly if an addon won’t import automatically on iOS, I just find a different addon rather than fighting with workarounds.

Installing Mods on Xbox

Xbox is more limited than mobile for addon installation. You can’t just download files from websites and import them – no browser access to download arbitrary files. Your options are the Minecraft Marketplace for official paid addons, or using realm uploads to transfer addons from another platform.

For better textures and visual enhancements, consider using one of the Best MCPE Texture Packs in 2025.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between behavior packs and resource packs?

Resource packs change appearances – textures, models, sounds, UI elements. Behavior packs change how things function – mob AI, item properties, game mechanics, crafting recipes. Most “mods” use both together to add new content that looks and behaves custom.

Can I use Java mods on Bedrock Edition?

No, completely incompatible. Java and Bedrock are coded differently and use different modding systems. Java mod files won’t even open in Bedrock. You need addons specifically made for Bedrock Edition.

Why won’t my addon work in multiplayer?

Everyone on the server or realm needs the same addons installed and activated. If you’re hosting, other players download the required packs automatically when joining. If you’re joining someone else’s world, you need to have their addons already or the game will download them when you connect.

Do addons disable achievements?

Depends on the addon. If it requires experimental gameplay, then yes, achievements get disabled for that world permanently. If it’s just resource and behavior packs without experiments, achievements stay enabled. The game warns you when creating/editing a world if your settings will disable achievements.
